Falling for Westwood Lake

November 1, 2016

Words by Guest Blogger Chris Istace   The days have become shorter The air has become crisp and a bit cooler The rain falls a little more often The clouds and fog roll amongst the trees   To many on Vancouver Island this sounds perfect and signifies that Fall is in full swing outdoors. A time to celebrate the changing of the seasons. To welcome new experiences in familiar places.   Recently I was in Nanaimo for an all day event on a Saturday and new that I would want a break during my stay. I had stopped briefly […]

Colliery Dam – An Off-Leash Dog Park Adventure

October 19, 2016

Written by Guest Blogger Chris Istace   For many of us getting outdoors is easy and fun with options abundant. Although for some of us out there we have one extra consideration when choosing our hiking location for the day – is it appropriate for our trusty four legged companions.   This past Spring my wife and I added an Australian Cattle Dog to our household. We chose the breed for it’s high energy levels and athletic prowess in the forest and mountains due to the nature of our outdoor passion.   Since this time, we have been searching out […]

Hiking Haslam: Another #ExploreNanaimo Adventure

October 11, 2016

Hey guys! TN Blogger Megan here. Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving Long Weekend! Mine was filled with family, food & fun outdoors. Since our Thanksgiving Dinner with my family was on Monday this year, we decided to embrace the sunny weather on Sunday morning and head south to Haslam Creek Trail & the Haslam Creek Suspension Bridge. This particular walking trail is a favourite with our family. It’s close to home (we live in the south end), the kids love looking for animal prints and slugs along the trail, and the best part is the suspension bridge over the creek. […]

#ExploreNanaimo: Neck Point Park

August 15, 2016

An #ExploreNanaimo Blog by TN Staffer Morgane I had heard a lot about Neck Point Park and was very happy to finally have an opportunity to visit. The park is aptly named for a gravel bar that connects the park to a rocky head of igneous rock out in the water; which really does resemble a long neck! There are 36 acres of waterfront to explore and winding trails through Garry Oak Groves. So my hubby and I packed up the dog (dogs are allowed on the paths but not the beach) and headed out at 7:30 at night. I […]

Nanaimo Camping Adventures: Brannen Lake

July 26, 2016

Compiled by: Guest Blogger Kimberly Plumley BRANNEN LAKE RV PARK & CAMPSITE   I lived! I know, a bit of a dramatic start for a story about camping, but I was awfully pleased with the outcome and wanted to shout it from the roof tops – or tent tops in this case. My family, (George, Grace, Ella and I) thought it would be a grand bonding experience if we headed out to a local campground. I thought it would make for a good story, so I said sure, sounds like an idea. Picking the campground for this adventure was easy […]

Waterfall Wanderings

July 6, 2016

When locals are asked about some of the reasons they love living in Nanaimo, most will attest to the beautiful outdoor adventures. The community is home to over 200 parks and trails, and narrowing down where to can be tough! The theme for today is waterfalls, and you’ve got some great options! We recommend the waterfall walks in the spring or fall because the rainfall will add to the wow of seeing them up close. Ammonite Falls This place is a gem. If you pick a sunny day, the spray almost looks like glitter pouring over the edge as the […]

Exploring the Haslam Creek Suspension Bridge

September 28, 2015

Nanaimo has a suspension bridge? Yes we do! Hi everyone, Amanda here! I have a secret to share with you. Not too many people know that Nanaimo has a suspension bridge. It is one of our best kept secrets. But I am here to spill the beans and share this little adventure with you. I have done a few of the trails in the area, but this time was significantly shorter since we were travelling with our little guy. Warning: my pictures do not it justice 🙂 The Haslam Creek Suspension Bridge Trail is part of the Trans Canada Trail. […]

#ExploreNanaimo Waterfall Walks

September 24, 2015

When asked what I love about living in Nanaimo, I always respond with “there are so many beautiful outdoor adventures”. Awesome, so we live in a community with over 200 parks and trails but narrowing down where to start is TOUGH! Let’s pick a theme, be it stairs, waterfalls or dog friendly – it will at least give you a place to start! I recommend the waterfall walks in the Spring or Fall because the rainfall will add to the WOW of seeing them up close. Number One: Ammonite Falls This place is a gem. It’s well worth hiking down to the […]

Road Riding in Nanaimo

July 31, 2015

Hey all – Lesley here! Last year I wrote about cycling on Gabriola Island. This summer I wanted to share my favourite road cycling routes in Nanaimo and the surrounding region. Nanaimo’s not necessarily a destination that one thinks of for road cycling, but after 18 months living here I’ve discovered that there are fantastic rides to be had and an avid road riding community. Whether you’re a local, or an out-of-towner here for a visit, there’s a ride of some type going on pretty much every day. Check the Mid-Island Velo Association’s website &/or Facebook page for up to […]

Make a SPLASH This Summer in Nanaimo

July 24, 2015

With summer in full swing, who doesn’t want to cool off and relax at a lake or beach?! Here are some local favourites: Westwood Lake This lake has it all. A nice sandy beach, two swimming areas, boat launch, boat rental right around the corner, and City of Nanaimo lifeguards are also on duty in the summer. So bring your beach towel and sand buckets and spend the day at this gorgeous lake. Long Lake Another great lake for swimming is Long Lake, conveniently located in central Nanaimo along the Island Highway. The beach area is right adjacent to a […]
