The Harbour City’s Best: Sushi in Nanaimo

January 7, 2020

Nanaimo is the place for superb, even sometimes extravagant, sushi. This city boasts a wide variety of cuisine. However, there are few dishes Nanaimo does better than this traditional Japanese food. From downtown to the North end, it’s a guarantee there’s a nearby sushi spot worth its weight in Sake.

Firehouse Grill

Once filled with firetrucks and equipment, Nanaimo’s old firehall is now home to a high-end and stylish restaurant. Located downtown Nanaimo on Victoria Street, the Firehouse Grill is the perfect place to grab a bite on your way to enjoy the delights downtown has to offer. Here, where the grill is as hot as the cocktails are cold, locals know the sushi is really where it’s at. From simple, basic rolls to some of the most dramatic and colourful presentations, sushi at the Firehouse Grill is a fulsome sensory experience. Because this gem is a busy place, so reservations are advisable particularly for larger groups.

Nori Japanese Restaurant

Nori’s has been around for almost 20 years and is a popular sushi spot with the locals. Located in North Nanaimo, they specialize in sushi, rice and noodle dishes. To try a variety of menu items, order one of their Bento lunch or dinner combos. Or you can throw caution to the wind and order omakase, a meal consisting of dishes selected by the chef. Of course it’s better to be safe than sushi-less, call ahead and make a reservation at Nori so you don’t miss out!

Umai Sushi

Umai. Translation: delicious. This is a restaurant that lives up to its name. Located on Uplands Ave in Central Nanaimo, Umai won the Nanaimo News Bulletin’s City’s Best Sushi in 2018. This restaurant features a sushi bar, menus of Maki and Nigiri, and the Chef’s Special sushi selection. Highlights of the menu include their Sushi Pizza, and their sauces. Each is a force to be reckoned with, with flavours like kiwi, sweet chilli, and butter garlic sauce drizzled on top of choice rolls. Trust us when we tell you, you’ll want to order seconds.

Bistro Taiyo

Located in the heart of the Old City Quarter on Wesley Street, this casual yet intimate restaurant offers a wide variety of sushi and other flavorful dishes. From Snapper to Octopus and Mackerel, you can be as tame or as daring as you want to with your order. Vegetarian? Don’t fret – Bistro Taiyo’s got you covered with such dishes as their sweet, deep-fried tofu and incredible Tempura.
