Wondering what’s going on January 5th-January 11th? We’ve got you covered!

Tuesday January 5th

6:30pm-8pm: Glow in the Dark Skates, Frank Crane Arena, General Admission rates apply with glow necklaces being $2. Come and enjoy Frank Crane Arena’s Glow in the Dark skate that offers dimmed lighting and special effects.

Nanaimo Art Gallery: Silva Part 2 Booming Grounds, admission by donation (suggested $2). Art Gallery located at 150 Commercial Street. Booming Grounds is an exhibition informed by the shifts that occur when trees become commodities.


Wednesday January 6th

10:30am-2:30pm: Cheese Making on Gabriola Island (Brie/Neufchatel), 72 hour advanced registration is necessary to prepare and sign up. Cost: Adult $100 for more information contact cheesemakingclasses@gmail.com Included with the finished cheese is wine for a nice lunch and complimentary pick up and drop off at the Gabriola ferry.

7pm: Nanaimo Clippers vs Alberni Valley Bulldogs, tickets cost anywhere from $5 to $20. Game takes place at Frank Crane Arena. Come out and support your local team!



Thursday January 7th

8:30pm-11pm: Country Idol 2016, sign up Dec.22-29th (open to 15-18 year olds with a parent or guardian). Located at the Queen’s Hotel. Prizes included for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Also a prize for the fan favourite!

4pm-5pm (Nanaimo Youth Orchestra), 5pm-6:15pm (Folk Band): Cost for the Youth Orchestra is $80 for members; the Folk Band is $200 for members and $250 for family. Located at Fairview Elementary School, 205 Howard Ave. Weekly group class that learns harmonized arrangements of traditional music in a fun and energetic way.

9pm-10pm: Live at Longwood Pub: Live acoustic music every Thursday night.

6pm-8pm: Music for an Elegant Evening, Marina’s Taverna and Pizzeria. The event is free of charge Come out and enjoy some great live music the best part is that it is free!

7pm-10pm: Nanaimo’s Songwriters Circle, Oak Tree Manor located on 325 Hecate Street Come on out and share your own written music and pass around ideas with others, hear positive feedback, and most importantly meet your other fellow singers/songwriters. All instruments welcome.

8:30pm-10:30pm: Nico Rhodes Trio live at the Vault Café, cost for attending is $15 for an adult and $10 for a student Enjoy a great live trio as it is not every day that three people perform live let alone one person.


Friday January 8th

8pm-11pm: Elvis Birthday Tribute show, Royal Canadian Legion Br #10. Located on 129 Harewood Rd. Cost is $20 for adults. Steve Elliot’s award winning tribute show (also songs from legendary artist Roy Orbison).

7:30pm-9pm: ‘Kirtan’ by OmTown Yoga Studio, located on 43 Commercial Street. Cost is $10 general and $5 for a child. Sing and dance as you have some call and response music fun. This is important in the Bhakti Yoga tradition as it helps you feel better connected with yourself.

8:30pm-9:30pm: Moksha Yoga Class (By Donation for Charity), located at 1881 Dufferin Crescent. Donation suggested is $10. Come and enjoy Moksha Yoga which takes the focus of yoga away from using a mat. All proceeds will support local or international charities.

7pm-8:30pm: Nanaimo Fiddle Club, located at Morpeth Hall on 620 Morpeth Ave. Cost is free for members and $2 at the door. For more information contact info@nanaimofiddlesociety.org Join fiddle players with their musical friends (guitar, penny whistle, irish drum, bass, piano, accordion, etc.) get together once a month to play tunes from all over the world.


6pm: VIU Mariners vs Columbia Bible College (Women’s game)

8pm: VIU Mariners vs Columbia Bible College (Men’s game)

Admission: $6 adults, $4 seniors/alumni/ high school or other students, 50% off if you have a valid Basketball BC membership, VIU students FREE

Saturday January 9th

9am-4pm: The Rest Revolution Retreat, located on Bethlehem Retreat Centre 2371 Arbot Rd. Cost is $119 adult, $99 for a senior or student, and $119 at the door. The Rest Revolution retreat specializes in Yoga Nidra, as well as exploring breath and body through gentle, supported postures, mindfulness techniques, and unwinding patterns of stress and holding in the body.

1pm: VIU Mariners vs KPU Eagles Basketball (Women’s Game)

3pm: VIU Mariners vs KPU Eagles Basketball (Men’s Game)

Admission: $6 adults, $4 seniors/alumni/high school or other students. 50% off if you have a valid Basketball BC membership, VIU students FREE

6pm: Nanaimo Clippers vs Powell River Kings at Frank Crane Arena Admission is anywhere from $5 to $20 come on out and let the players hear your cheers.

6pm-8pm: Saturday Music at New York Style Pizza, this a free event located at the restaurant on 499 Wallace Street. Have a bite to eat of either pizza, pasta, or both while you listen to Marty Steele serenade you with jazz, blues, and rock tunes on his keyboard.

7:30pm-9pm: Comedian Toby Hargrave live at the Port Theatre, cost is $25 for general and $30 at the door. Come out and enjoy funny man Toby Hargrave, who has been Corner Gas as well as a Just for Laughs Comedy tour.


Sunday January 10th

11am-4pm: Nanaimo Flea Market, this a free event located at Mount Benson Legion Hall on 1630 East Wellington Rd. Enjoy as the Flea Market is back every Sunday and you can venture down to check out the huge variety of products.

4pm: Sunday Blues Jam (by Nanaimo Blues Society), located at the Queen’s Hotel on 24 Victoria Crescent. Cost is $5 for an adult.

1pm, 4pm, and 7pm: Theatre One’s Fringe Flicks 2016, shows being played at Avalon Cinema. Cost is $12 for an adult, $60.60/6 films if you are a member, or $12 at the door. Come inside and enjoy the film `What We did on our Holiday` as Fringe Flicks showcases international, independent, and Sundance festival acclaimed movies.



Monday January 11th
