When to Travel to Nanaimo
Nanaimo changes with the seasons, but the city's temperate coastal climate remains accessible year-round. It's never too hot or cold here in the summer and winter, and often just right in the spring and fall. With mild weather like this all year long, you never have to worry about when to travel to Nanaimo. It's a vacation destination for all the seasons!
Peak travel times to Nanaimo are from June to October, when sunny weather lasts for weeks at a time, and popular events take place almost daily. The city's biggest party happens in late July during the annual Marine Festival and World Championship Bathtub Race, which dates back to 1967. Canada Day on July 1 is also a big draw, offering hours of live music downtown, a Show 'n' Shine car show, and dazzling fireworks at Parksville Beach just north of the city. Nanaimo also hosts a Dragon Boat Festival in early July, a community radio street party in late June, and a Friday farmer's market and craft fair, from April to October, on the waterfront.
Nanaimo's arts scene comes alive in the fall, when approximately 20,000 university students (nearly a quarter of the city's population) return to studies at Malaspina University-College. The fall semester ushers in a season of live music shows and theatre events in venues around town, and on campus. Malaspina also hosts a wide variety of national and international academic forums and conferences between September and April. Nanaimo's largest arts venue, the Port Theatre, also gets busy during the fall, with regular performances by the Vancouver Island Symphony, and a long roster of stage plays and pop music concerts.
Nanaimo's mild, rainy winters set the scene for some of its most heralded events, including the festival of trees gala and light-up at Malaspina, the New Year's street party downtown, and the Québécois Maple Sugar Festival in February. It's also a great time to take advantage of less expensive room rates and discount package deals to resorts in the central island area.
Finally, there's springtime. With trees blossoming throughout the city amid a fine mix of sun and ocean breeze, this is considered by many to be Nanaimo's most beautiful season. There are few tourist crowds in April and May, and the weather is ideal for checking out the city's many oceanside parks, mountain trailways, and surrounding islands.
