Industry Development

Informational Sessions

Over the past few years Tourism Nanaimo has offered a series of education workshops each year, usually facilitated by local service providers. Although the workshops have been finding success, attendance and implementation of the ideas has been limited.

In 2008, Tourism Nanaimo will create a series of informational session such as a brown bag lunch series that are industry driven. Four topics will be selected, and industry experts will be contacted to join panel presentations on selected topics.

The goal of these sessions is for them to be short, informative, and offer strategies that members can implement immediately. The first session will be on Media Relations in January followed by Maximizing Membership Value, Preparing for the Olympics, and Packaging Opportunities. Sessions will last approximately 90 minutes.

Frontline Development

With Tourism Nanaimo's new mandate to make sure that visitors maximize their experience in the Harbour City, there is much work to do to educate the local frontline staff as to what there is to see and do in Nanaimo. Quite often they are a visitor's only source of information and many of them are limited to their own experience of the city.

In 2008, Tourism Nanaimo will change all that by hosting a series of frontline staff development opportunities. The goal of these events is to create a fun way for the frontline staff of tourism-related businesses to learn what there is to do in Nanaimo. This will be accomplished using several different strategies:

  • Come Play Nanaimo: Working with partners, Tourism Nanaimo will host a minimum of one cross-promotional event in the spring of 2008. This will be a fun-filled event that encourages frontline staff to learn about all this city has to offer, while at the same time educating others about the services and products their businesses offer.
  • Certified Ambassador Workshops: To further reinforce the learning for the frontline staff, we are offering a Certified Ambassador Workshop. This four-hour long workshop will be developed to educate participants on handling specific visitor types, and to provide ideas and resource materials for future use. Tourism Nanaimo will develop a recognition program that rewards businesses and staff for taking the training.
  • Resource Manuals: As a service to our members, Tourism Nanaimo will provide frontline properties with visitor information resource materials that highlight Tourism Nanaimo members.
